Kenny Carter

February 12, 1947 – September 12, 2025

Kennedy James Carter, “Kenny”, age 78, passed away on September 12, 2025.

Kenny was born in Newport News, Virginia, to Melvin Brozier Carter and Eunice Shanko Carter.

He is preceded in death by his brother Melvin Brozier Carter, Jr. and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Gupton Carter; his daughters, Kimberly Carter and Debbie Carter Rasmussen (Steve), his sister, June Highsmith (Leslie), his brother, Donald Carter (Adelle), nephew Charley Highsmith, nieces Leslie Highsmith Brokken, Michele Waggoner, Wendy Carter, and devoted cousins Wesley Wash, James Shanko, John Shanko (Patti), Jana Carlton (Steve), and Judy Willis.

Kenny was called at a young age to the Gospel Ministry.  He served God faithfully for 55 years as a Minister of Music, Youth, and Church Growth. His longest tenures in Virginia were at Providence Baptist in Vienna, Mount Pleasant Baptist in Colonial Heights, Powers Memorial Baptist in Hopewell, and Immanuel Baptist in Colonial Heights. He lived by his faith and his life was an example to many.

He loved fishing, vacations in Nags Head, family cruises, Carter Family Fun Days, Washington Commanders and Notre Dame football, and his forever love, Helen.  Kenny really enjoyed time with family and friends. Parties with choirs and Sunday School classes were special to him. His jokes and sense of humor will be missed. His genuine caring spirit for those he came in contact with truly left a lasting impact on their lives.

The family will receive friends and family at a visitation on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 5 to 7 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 1 pm, also at Immanuel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, Colonial Heights or Richmond’s First Baptist Church in appreciation for their television ministry and outreach during his illness.
