Dixie Wood
Dixie M. Wood, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025. Born and raised in Kilmarnock, VA, she was the second daughter of the late Dr. Elmer Richard and Hazel Greathouse Moorman. Following her graduation from Kilmarnock High School in 1953, she moved to Richmond, VA and obtained her certification in x-ray technology. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles H. Headley (“C.H.”), in 1956 and became a stay-at-home mother in 1959. They welcomed four more children from 1960 to 1971. In 1973, tragedy struck when C.H. was killed during an armed robbery. Dixie returned to full-time employment as a medical transcriber at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. She continued in this career at St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s Hospitals, retiring later from a medical practice in White Stone, VA.
In 1984, she married Innis Wood, Jr., a man she knew while growing up in the Northern Neck, and together they enjoyed retired life in Kilmarnock until his death in 2016. Dixie treasured her hometown and friendships, but she later moved away in 2020 to be closer to her family.
Above all of her contributions in life, she was most proud of her family who survive her: her children, Lisa Hart (Bill Powanda) of Brick, NJ; Chuck Headley of Virginia Beach, VA; Janet (Tom) Bridwell of Concord, NC; Linda (Roy) Peay of Mechanicsville, VA; and Polly (Matt) Poffenroth of Rockville, MD; her grandchildren, Sean (Liz) Hart of Alexandria, VA; Patrick (Erin) Hart of Brick, NJ; and Lauren Hart of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Charlie and Joe Headley of Chesterfield, VA; Laura (Angel) Sotomayer of Charlotte, NC; Tyler and Cory Peay of Mechanicsville, VA; Ella, Henry and Grace Poffenroth of Rockville, MD; Alex (Blair) Bridwell of Douglas, GA; her great-grandchildren, Kensi and Eliana Lopez, Milo and Mateo Sotomayer, of Charlotte, NC. She was the aunt to a host of nieces and nephews.
Dixie’s beloved sister, Frances Hawkins, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away two days after she did.
Dixie will be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, sense of humor, and unwavering faith. A memorial service will be held on February 7, 2026, a day before her 90th birthday, at 1 PM, at New Highland Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service; and a reception will follow the service in the Christian Life Center. In lieu of flowers, they request donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Dixie Wood.
