Kathryn Anne “Kathy” Mertens

Kathryn Anne “Kathy” Mertens, 78, of Goochland, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026. She was born on December 5, 1947, in Richmond, Virginia.

Kathy was preceded in death by her loving parents, Louise Morano Mertens and George Eugene Mertens, as well as her brother, G. Ernest Mertens. She is survived by her  niece, Shea Kristine Tolson (Toby), who will continue to carry forward her memory with love.

Kathy grew up, and lived her life in the Richmond area until moving to Goochland with her mother in the 1990s. The Mertens family were devout Catholics, worshipping at St. Benedict’s, and with Kathy graduating from St. Gertrude’s High School.  Kathy and her mother were very close throughout life, and especially following her father’s passing in 1985.

Kathy will be remembered as a generous, funny, and feisty woman whose loyalty to those she loved never wavered. She had a remarkable gift for bringing warmth and laughter into the lives of others, and her friendships were deep, lasting, and meaningful.

A lifelong lover of animals;  horses and dogs in particular, Kathy dedicated much of her life to caring for animals. When visiting her home the newest pet was always a surprise.  It could be anything from a tropical bird to a miniature horse or anything in between.  Her natural instincts and compassion made her an extraordinary dog rescuer. Over the years, she helped find loving, forever homes for hundreds of dogs—many of whom she personally nursed back to health with patience, determination, and an unwavering heart. Her work was not just a passion, but a calling that left a lasting impact on countless animals and the families who welcomed them.

Kathy’s career reflected her love for animals, as she worked at Little Joe’s tack shop and with numerous veterinary clinics throughout her life. Wherever she went, she was known for her knowledge, dedication, and genuine care.

Kathy’s legacy lives on in the many lives she touched—both human and animal alike. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
