Samuel Robert Howard, Jr

HOWARD, Samuel Robert Jr., lovingly known as “Sam” and affectionately called “Mac” by his granddaughters, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, at the age of 93, in his daughter’s home, surrounded by love.  

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy G Howard and Samuel R Howard.   He is survived by his son Robert Howard, daughter Mary Helen (Bertie) Edwards, and son-in-law Bobby, as well as his beloved granddaughters: Samantha Harp (Eric) , Allison Edwards and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Edwards, who were truly the light of his life.  

Sam dedicated over 47 years of hard work and commitment to Esskay Meat Company, building a career and a reputation for dedication and integrity.  Often called “Mr. Esskay,” he was the hardest working person you could meet, a trait he passed on to his family along with the values of generosity, kindness and perseverance.  

A man with a warm and loving heart, Sam loved life’s simple pleasures.  He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, attending all his granddaughters’ events to cheer them on, and sitting on the deck with his beloved dogs while enjoying a cigar.  He never met a stranger and found joy in everyday moments – especially going out to eat!  His gentle nature, kind heart, and easy smile made him someone loved by all who knew him.  

Sam was a devoted father and grandfather.  His love for his family was unwavering, and he took great pride in being an active and present part of their lives.   He was surrounded by that same love until the very end.  Sam will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Henrico, Va. followed by a celebration of life at his daughter’s home.
