Howard James “Jim” Martin
Dr. Howard James “Jim” Martin, 75, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 3, 2026. Born in Buffalo, New York, Jim dedicated his professional life to public health and retired as Director of the Virginia Cancer Registry with the Virginia Department of Health.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Libby Martin.
He is survived by his daughters Cynthia Martin and her partner, Justin Stearns, and Emily Martin and her husband, Wesley McLaughlin; his grandchildren, Kensington Parker, Norah and Bishop Stearns, and Marsali and Pierce McLaughlin; his siblings Sarah Martin, Charles Martin and his wife, Debby, and Cynthia Hatch and her husband, Bill; and many extended family members, friends, and former colleagues.
A perpetual scholar of anthropology and epidemiology, Jim earned multiple degrees, including a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Virginia after completing his fieldwork in Taiwan.
Those who knew Jim best will remember his kindness, integrity, and gentle nature. As a lifelong learner whose curiosity never faded, he was widely respected for his intelligence and commitment to serving others. Taiwan held a special place in his heart and remained one of his favorite destinations, fostered by a deep appreciation for its culture and especially the food.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Further details will be shared with family and friends.
