Henry Ward McElroy, Jr.

April 2, 1941 – April 27, 2025

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Henry “Buddy” Ward McElroy, Jr.—beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend—who died peacefully on Sunday April 27, 2025, at the age of 84 following a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Henry was the son of Henry McElroy Sr. and Lorraine George. He later moved to Hampton, Virginia where he graduated from Hampton High School in 1960. There, he was a varsity football player and proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi fraternity.

Henry began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he helped build the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). His passion for learning led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Elementary Education from Lynchburg College, and later a master’s degree in Education and Counseling from Salem State College.

Over the years, Henry worked in many industries including education, forestry, computers, sales and training and public service—and was admired for his integrity, kindness, and wisdom. A lifelong student of history, politics, faith, and the law, he filled his days with reading, writing, and thoughtful conversation.

An adventurer at heart, Henry’s journeys took him across the globe—from teaching in the Dominican Republic to exploring Machu Picchu, Iceland, Italy, and Pakistan. Still, his most treasured memories were made closer to home, during family vacations on the beaches of Maine and North Carolina.

Above all, Henry cherished his role as Dad and Granddad. He is survived by his loving children Kelley O’Hara (Walter), Henry “Tripp” McElroy III (Kim), and Shannon Peifer (Brad), his grandchildren Riley O’Hara, Luke O’Hara, Sullivan Peifer, Avery Peifer, and Desmond McElroy, his second wife Donna Quinter, and his companion Marietta Randolph.

He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Carl Holler, and first wife Barbara Ann Woodward.

A private celebration of Henry’s life will be held with his family. He will be commemorated at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to either of these organizations in Henry’s memory:

Henry broke the mold—fueled by boundless curiosity, a welcoming heart, and an irrepressible zest for life. His warmth and wit touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
