John Alden Byrum Jr

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Alden Byrum, Jr. who passed away on July 14, 2026 at the age of 71 in Richmond, VA.

John was born in Suffolk, VA to John Alden Byrum, Sr. And Virginia Mae Rhodes Byrum. He grew up in Suffolk and attended John Yates High School and Chowan College. He retired from Fredericksburg City Schools after a 30+ year career. 

Throughout his life John enjoyed woodworking, music and sports, and cherished time spent with his kitties: Coo and Shadow, friends, and family.

He is survived by his father, John Alden Byrum, Sr, his siblings: Keith Byrum, Ginny Fly (George), his three children: Mendy Ault, Molly Rogers (Kenny), Thomas Onoff (Jennifer), and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and a great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his mother Virginia Byrum, and his wife of 39 years, Cindy Byrum. 

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service followed by a short reception to celebrate John’s life on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 4:30pm at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, 2208 Lafayette Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hume-Lee Transplant Center at VCU. 

John will be remembered for his strength, faith and temperament and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
