January 1931 – January 2026Madeline Bohannon Bates, age 94, peacefully departed this life on January 1, 2026, at Shalom Gardens Senior Living in Henrico, Virginia.Madeline was born in 1931, to her parents Edwin E. Bohannon and Effie Bohannon (Hall) in Richmond, Virginia.She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Morse A. Bates; her son-in-law, Floyd Amason; and her sister Jean F. Simpson.She is survived by two daughters, Alice Marie Bates and Janet Leigh Amason; siblings Edwin “Bunny” E. Bohannon, Jr. (Rosemary) and Kathy Hubbard (Charles); one step-grandson, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.In her early twenties, Madeline began a life-long career at the Bank of Virginia (now Wells Fargo Bank), and she retired from the bank in 1992.She was known for her excellent skills as a seamstress, and she enjoyed sewing garments and crafts for family, friends, and community groups. She also had a strong passion for music and performance, and she was a member of the Greater Richmond Chapter of Sweet Adelines for many years in the 1980s.Madeline will be lovingly laid to rest at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, in Glen Allen, Virginia. A private memorial service for close family members and friends will be held at a later date.The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate care and service provided by the staff of Enlight Hospice of Virginia, Richmond Coach and Cremation Service, and Mount Vernon Memorial Park; and for the loving care and support of the staff and many friends at the senior living communities of both Shalom Gardens and The Virginian.
