Susan D. Field

Susan Durell Field, of Midlothian, VA, 84, died Thursday, February 26, 2026, after a brief and unexpected illness. Preceded in death by her son, Christopher C. Berry, she is survived by her remaining two children: Andrew B. (wife Sarah) Berry of Richmond, and Pamela B. (husband John) Swecker of Midlothian.

She was born in Brockton, MA, the daughter of Fred Forest Field III and Elizabeth Durell Field. Many of her summers were spent in the village of Cotuit on Cape Cod. Susan was a graduate of Endicott College in Beverly, MA.

She was a loving mother, gifted artist, and close friend to many. She used her artistic talents to express her love for others through her Patchwork Names, handmade jewelry, hand-painted cards and paper boxes for friends and family, and beautiful hand-beaded stockings for her grandchildren.

Her young family moved to Richmond, VA in 1972 where she and her ex-husband, Sam, raised their three children: Christopher, Andrew, and Pamela . She eventually moved to Urbanna, VA and proudly identified herself as “Nana Banana from Urbanna” for her four grandchildren (Tate and Jack Swecker, and Stelle and Alex Berry) whom she loved and honored throughout her life. Susan was deeply proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with them. She had an uncanny ability to connect with children and make them feel safe and loved. There was never a baby she couldn’t console or a child she wasn’t able to engage in a lengthy conversation about themselves. Susan had a clever sense of humor, a laugh that was loud and contagious, and she always tried to lead with kindness. She will be dearly missed.

In accordance with her strong wishes, her family will have a very small, private service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Susan’s name to the Compassionate Friends:
